Printer is an output device. It is a hardware output devices that produces text or graphics output on a paper. It accepts input command by users on a computer and laptop, print the documents on other devices.

There are two types of printer :-

  1. Impact Printers
  2. Non-Impact Printers

Impact Printer
Those printers have direct mechanical contact with the print medium usually paper to create an images.

Characteristics of Impact Printer are the following:

  • Very noisy
  • Very low consumable costs
  • Useful for bulk printing due to low costs
  • There are physical contact with the paper to produce an image.

There are three types of impact printer.

  1. Daisywheel Printers
  2. Dot Matrix Printers
  3. Line Printers

Daisywheel Printers
Head is lying on a wheel and pins corresponding to characters are like petals of Daisy, it is called Daisy Wheel Printer. These printers are generally used for word-processing in offices that require a few letters with very nice quality.
They can't print graphics and printing from can to about 75 characters per second.

Advantages

  • More reliable
  • Fonts of characters can be easily changed
  • Better quality

Disadvantages

  • Slower than Dot Matrix Printer
  • More expensive than DPA
  • It is noisy

Dot-Matrix Printers
One of the most popular printers is Dot-Matrix Printer in the markets. It is popular because of their ease of printing and economical price. Dot-matrix printers create character by striping pins against ink-ribbon. Each pins max a dot of characters and images. We can print this type of printer in the form of a Matrix of pin of size (5×7, 7×9, 9×7 or 9×9) and different modules like bold, italic and underline.

Advantages

  • Wedly used
  • Inexpenssive
  • Other language can be printed

Disadvantages

  • Slow speed
  • Poor quality

Line Printers
Line printer is a text type printer which print one line as a time and graphics as the text line printers are fast in speed and print 300 to 3000 lines per minute.

Advantages

  • Line printer prints very high speed.
  • Different languages can be used with this printer.

Disadvantages

  • It is very expensive.
  • It is very noisy.
